Karate for Mental Health
Thank you for visiting this page to find out more about Karate for Mental Health.
Karate for Mental Health is a concept promoted by our good friend, author, and fellow Karate instructor, Les Bubka (you can visit Les' website by clicking here).
According to NHS England:
The past couple of years have been particularly difficult for many, with the added stresses caused by the COVID-19 situation and the aftermath putting even more people under mental strain.
We'd love to help people improve their mental wellbeing through Karate.
How can our Karate classes help with this?
Our Karate karate classes meet all 5 recognised “steps to mental wellbeing” (please click on each of the steps below for more details):

Our Karate karate classes meet all 5 recognised “steps to mental wellbeing” (please click on each of the steps below for more details):
1. CONNECT WITH OTHER PEOPLE
Having good social relationships with other people is important for your mental wellbeing.
It helps you to build a sense of belonging and self-worth, and gives you an opportunity to share positive experiences.
It also provides you with emotional support, and allows you to support others.
Our Karate classes give you a regular opportunity for social interaction, all amongst a group of genuinely lovely people.

2. BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE
Regular physical activity is great for both your physical, and mental, health.
What’s more, exercise causes chemical changes in your brain which can help to positively change your mood.
Setting yourself goals, such as earning your next belt, also gives you a sense of achievement when you succeed, which raises your self-esteem.
We love helping people to achieve their potential, and will support you along your entire Karate journey.
Perhaps most importantly, Karate is fun! Let's face it, you're far more likely to stick to something which you enjoy doing.

3. LEARN NEW SKILLS
Learning new skills improves your mental well-being by boosting self confidence and enhancing self esteem.
It also helps you build a sense of purpose, and helps you connect with others who have a similar interest.
Every Karate class is about learning new skills, and developing the skills you already have. This also helps to keep it interesting, while other physical activities can quickly become boring or monotonous.

4. GIVE TO OTHERS
Acts of giving and kindness and service can improve your mental well-being by creating positive feelings and a sense of reward.
This, in turn, and give you a feeling of purpose and self-worth, whilst also helping you connect with other people.
If you'd like an opportunity to give to others, there are plenty of volunteering opportunities available in our classes; there’s always lots to be done!
Even simple acts of kindness like helping a less-able member with something they are struggling with can be extremely rewarding.

5. PAY ATTENTION TO THE PRESENT MOMENT (MINDFULNESS)
Many of us have a tendency to rush through life without stopping to notice much.
Paying attention to the present moment - your thoughts and feelings, and the world around you - can improve your mental wellbeing.
This is sometimes called "mindfulness".
Mindfulness can help you to enjoy your life more, and understand yourself better.
When done as a moving form of meditation, Karate can also help with “savouring the moment”.
On the occasions when we practice outdoors, getting back in touch with our natural environment can also help us to appreciate things that we often take for granted or don't even notice on a day-to-day basis.

We know that people with mental health problems can suffer a cycle of stigma, which can make it uncomfortable for them to join in with large group exercise classes.
