Karate classes for ADULTS
Who Have Trained In Martial Arts Before
So, you’ve done some Karate (or perhaps another martial art) before, and are thinking about attending our classes?
We think, if you have an open mind, you will enjoy and benefit from what we do!
If you have done Karate previously, there's a fair chance you'll find our classes to be a little unconventional compared to many “traditional” Karate clubs. We don't march up and down the dojo performing technique after technique to fresh air; instead, we do a LOT of partner-based work. Also, the “striking” techniques which people commonly think of as defining Karate is only a small part of our syllabus; we also perform throws and break-falls, locks, grappling, restraints, pressure-point manipulation, and even chokes and strangles (all in a carefully controlled manner), plus standing and ground techniques. You might think you see aspects of Aikido, Ju-Jitsu, Boxing, Kung Fu, Judo, or even “competitive MMA” in what we do, but really we are just doing Karate in its more original (complete) form.
You may be wondering whether we will recognise a grade you have been awarded by another group. We have no fixed rules on this. Any grade awarded to you by another instructor cannot be "taken away", but it’s probably best that you/we wait to see how much “overlap” there is between what you have previously done, and what we do before a decision is made as to whether we can recognise your previous grade. Alternatively, if you want to be humble and wear a white belt (we can loan you one if required) and wait for us to assess what level you are equivalent to in our system, that would also be fine.
Of course, a good deal of time may have passed since you last trained, and you might be concerned about how much you’ve forgotten! Don’t worry about anything – the knowledge and ability is probably all still “in there” somewhere, and we’d be delighted to help you find it, without passing judgement… by restarting your training, you have already earned our respect!
Similarly, if you've lost some of your stamina or fitness, or put-on a few extra pounds of weight, we'll do our very best to help you get back into better condition, working within your current capabilities in the meantime.

Having said all of the above, it's now time for us to bring up an "awkward" subject.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but there are a few things that we find it's best to mention up-front to people who have previous experience in martial arts, to avoid any problems later. It's a shame we have to mention these things, but past experience tells us that it's easier to do so now, to avoid any misunderstandings. Firstly, please be aware that we have high standards, and our belts must be earned through knowledge, practice and effort. A true martial artist would have it no other way. Occasionally, people come to us thinking they can earn a belt more easily with us than somewhere else - that's definitely not the case! We also won't award you a belt in Karate just because you are competent in another martial art and regurgitate what you have previously learned... whilst there is certainly overlap between all martial arts, there are also differences that we would expect you to recognise, study, and practice in-depth. On a similar note, though it might sound like a profile on an online dating website, we are looking for long-term relationships! We have no interest in students who jump from group-to-group, trying to pick-up “party tricks” to add to their repertoire of techniques. It’s going to take a while to learn what we do, and this will require a certain level of commitment from you, in terms of your time. Finally, as you have prior martial arts experience, at some stage we might invite you to share your pre-existing knowledge with our students, but please don't force it upon anyone in the meantime. You may think you know a lot already (indeed, you may actually know a lot already!) but we would ask you to please “empty your cup” and observe/get a feel for what we do, rather than coming straight in and telling everyone how you have previously done things differently. To that end, please don’t try teaching or "correcting" others in our classes unless you are specifically invited to do so by one of our instructors. You may well have some great knowledge to share but, equally, what you think you know may not be in line with the principles that we work to. |

Now that we've got that out of the way, we'd like to make clear that we would genuinely love for you to come along and see what you think of our classes. We are an incredibly friendly and helpful bunch, and we love meeting new people and sharing our knowledge and experience.
Please do get in touch and/or come along for a FREE trial. We think you'll be glad that you did!

FREE TRIAL OF karate CLASSES FOR ADULTS
WHO HAVE TRAINED IN MARTIAL ARTS BEFORE
We offer a FREE trial of up to one month for all "new to us" adult students, even if you have done martial arts somewhere previously. The trial gives you chance to see what we do and whether it's going to be something you enjoy and find useful, and a chance to meet the existing students and get a feel for the atmosphere of the classes. It's also our opportunity to see that you are a person of good character, and that you will fit in well; people with excessive egos and/or aggressive attitudes are weeded-out at this stage, ensuring that our classes are an enjoyable and safe place to be for everyone else!
If you still have a uniform from when you practised martial arts previously, you are welcome to wear that initially (though if it's anything other than a plain white or plain black gi, we may ask you to replace it in time), or alternatively you can just wear something loose and casual such as a t-shirt and shorts/leggings/tracksuit trousers instead. We also have Karate gi (uniform) for sale if you want to buy a new one. Don't forget to trim you toe nails and finger nails beforehand, so as to reduce the likelihood of injury during training.
Even though you have done martial arts previously, we do require a short form to be completed before you can participate in our classes... we can either send you one in advance by email/post, or you can collect one and fill it out when you come for your first class if you'd rather (be sure to arrive 10 minutes early if you plan to fill the form out "on the day", however).

Please note that all monthly membership fees must be paid in advance at the beginning of each month, by direct debit. We do not accept payments by cash/cheque for monthly membership fees, due to the additional banking fees and administration fees we would incur. The monthly membership fees are also based upon continuous payment, irrespective of any periods of non-attendance. Of course, if ever you wished to cease attending our classes, you can ask us to cancel your direct debit at any time.
As a very established Karate group (we have been teaching in Cornwall for over 18 years!), we already have 80+ existing students paying for their classes by direct debit; join them with confidence!
